Middlesbrough Environment City
We are Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) are a charity dedicated to promoting healthy and sustainable living using the ten principles of One Planet Living. We work extensively in and around the Tees Valley area to support healthy lifestyles and create sustainable change through community action and events.
MEC is home to numerous environmental and sustainable projects including; Affordable Warmth, Horticulture, Middlesbrough Food Partnership, Climate Action Middlesbrough and Active Travel.
Here is a small insight into a few of our projects:
Middlesbrough Food Partnership
The Middlesbrough Food Partnership acts as a central connecting network and hub for all food-related matters in Middlesbrough. The vision is to make the town a place where local people can eat good quality, healthy food that is easy to buy, offers value for money and is produced locally wherever possible. It is an award winning and national frontrunner in healthy and sustainable food, achieving the Sustainable Food Cities Bronze award in 2017, and in 2019 were the first location to progress from Bronze to the Sustainable Food Places Silver Award. The Food Partnership takes a holistic whole food systems approach to addressing challenges facing the town and region, working with a range of partners from public, private and VCSE sectors locally and regionally on issues such as procurement, health inequalities and tackling food insecurity.
Climate Action Middlesbrough
Climate Action Middlesbrough (CAM) is a programme which aims to facilitate reductions in Middlesbrough’s carbon footprint and encourage a change towards more sustainable lifestyles. In essence, we hope to increase community action across the areas of sustainable food, sustainable transportation, domestic energy, waste and the natural environment, as well as inspiring sustained changes in individual, community and organisational behaviours in relation to climate change.
Active Travel
Our Active Travel team deliver Bikeability training to Primary Schools across the Tees Valley. Bikeability, overseen by the Bikeability Trust, is the Department for Transport’s flagship national cycle training programme for schoolchildren across England and is a practical, framework-driven training system designed to develop the skills of children, as well as their confidence, to allow them to cycle safely. In doing so, it improves their health and also works towards the reduction of carbon emissions from cars. One of the key focuses of our Active Travel team is that of Pedestrian Training, under the tenets of Stop, Look, Listen, Think. Pedestrian training is an essential part of young children’s lives: It teaches them how to respect the road and cross it safely.
Communities Growing Together
Communities Growing Together aims to bring build social cohesion and resilience, supporting healthier lifestyles and creating sustainable change through community action. The project takes part in various community activities, as well as co-ordinating several community activities, and has already teamed up with a number of local organisations including ‘All Year Round The Flower Patch’, ‘Staying Put Agency’ and ‘Regeneration of Communities’ (based at Saltersgill Allotments).
